The Art World's Coldest Collective Just Became a Charity and They're Throwing a Party to Prove It

Some announcements are made with press releases and polite cocktails. Others come with vinyl crackling through vintage speakers, raffles stuffed with handmade shit, and artists in thrifted Margiela knockoffs dancing under LED spotlights. Vengeance Foundation’s charity announcement is — delightfully — the latter.

As of this summer, Toronto’s beloved underground art collective has officially entered its nonprofit era, securing federal charity status after years of organizing some of the city’s most genre-defying cultural programming. Think pop-up galleries in unexpected spaces, performances that feel like rituals, and a community ethos that favors grit over gloss.

To mark the milestone, Vengeance Foundation is hosting an event on August 2 at its west-end headquarters, Youthful Vengeance — part opening reception, part announcement party, all vibe. There will be art (of course), music (loud), raffles (stacked), and community (the good kind). Tickets are available on YV Eventbrite, with proceeds directly supporting future exhibitions, artist grants, and programming.

“We’ve always been DIY to our core,” says founder David Choi, who built the Foundation from a series of grassroots pop-ups into a widely respected cultural force. “Getting charity status doesn’t change who we are — it just means we can do more, for more people, and do it with real backing.”

The Foundation’s impact is hard to ignore. Through programs like Weeks of Vengeance (a rotating exhibition for emerging artists), Months of Vengeance (a monthly exhibition series inviting professional artists outside of Toronto), and the recently announced Tour de V (a touring initiative bringing local art across Canada), VF has supported over 170 artists over 50 exhibitions and reached over 30,000 guests through its community-driven events.

Still, for all its accolades, the August 2 event won’t be a gala — it’ll be a declaration of intent, rooted in the same bold, anti-institutional energy that made Vengeance Foundation a standout in the first place.

So: ditch the cocktail attire, grab your crew, and come prepared for a party where nonprofit meets nonconformist.
