Soft Return: Alexandria Masse

There is something quietly compelling about the act of return, a gesture that is at once familiar and subtly transformative. Soft Return, an exhibition by Alexandria Masse, invites viewers into this delicate space, turning the concept of return into a tactile, visual experience. Visitors are invited to slow down, observe, and immerse themselves in a space where form, colour, and repetition intersect.

In Soft Return, Masse uses crochet and knitting to capture fleeting moments of feeling, creating works that exist between painting and sculpture. Central to her practice is her hand-dyeing of Canadian wool. By colouring the wool herself, sometimes before crocheting or knitting, other times after completing a piece, she maintains precise control over both colour and form. This hands-on approach allows for experimentation, producing pieces that respond uniquely to the material while retaining a deeply human touch.

Looping is more than a technique; it is a rhythm, a deliberate return to what is fleeting. Each piece offers an invitation to engage with the ephemeral made tangible. Curated by Deirdre McIntosh, Soft Return is a celebration of process, material, and memory.

Alexandria Masse (b. 2000) is a textile and fibre artist from Wawiiatanong (Windsor, ON), known for her large-scale soft sculptures. She has exhibited internationally and shared her work with millions online.
