There’s a moment before every crossing — a breath, a hesitation — when the world seems to pause. It’s in that silence that Michael J.B. Black paints.
In UNENTERED, Black’s latest body of work, gates, portals, and passageways stand as quiet sentinels. Each painting dwells in the hush before a choice, a space where every door waits. These are not depictions of places to pass through, but meditations on the act of choosing itself — the tension between stillness and movement, between staying and stepping forward.

Black’s fascination with thresholds has long guided his practice. Over the years, his canvases have become studies in liminality: layered surfaces that recall weathered stone and ancient ruins, their textures built up slowly, like memory. Through these layers, color and light seem to shift with time, revealing glimpses of something beyond reach — the suggestion of another world just out of sight.
In UNENTERED, this sense of in-between deepens. The paintings hold their viewers in a quiet suspension, inviting reflection on the unseen boundaries we navigate daily — the moments when time folds, when decision becomes possibility.
Standing before these works feels like standing before a door that will never open, yet still calls to be imagined.
